I think I’ll transcribe Newton’s notebook just to hold my hand over the writing. The first surprise is how familiar Newton’s language is. I was expecting scrolled and powdered notations in frothy, Shakespearean English. But Newton reads simple, casual, thorough, curious, humored, not entirely undistracted, and proud of it. The difference in the script is more profound than the difference in voice.
Newton’s “y”-like notation is a steno for the sound “th” and is used with endings as shorthand for ‘this’ and ‘than,’ ‘the’ and ‘that.’ Given yt decoding, Newton reads smooth as skating, undated.
